50% of LCDs for TVs to be made in Europe in 2010
DATE: 11th December 2009
In 2010, more than half of the LCDs used in the TVs in Europe could be made locally. Around 40 million LCD TVs of 32" and above are sold in Europe each year and already there is capacity for 18 million LCD modules in Central Europe, according to Meko's most recent research. Last week AUO announced its plans to start producing LCD modules in Europe by establishing a manufacturing base in Slovakia. LG Display, Sharp and Samsung already have substantial module assembly facilities in Poland and Slovakia, so this move will increase pressure on the new Chimei Innolux business to follow suit or it may find itself at a major competitive disadvantage. A move by Chimei Innolux would mean that the top five LCD makers in the world would all have local TV assembly. During times like these, it is essential that players in the supply chain for TV in Europe have the true and most up-to-date information. Meko Limited, the market research and consultancy specialist for the European electronic display industry, is to publish in January the latest industry analysis of flat panel TV assembly within the European market with a revision to take into account these developments. Meko's experienced analysts are able to create this authoritative report by conducting market surveys of the top brands, main manufacturers and set assemblers, and combining it with DisplayCast market research data to give an overall opinion about how the European flat panel TV industry is responding to the changes in the supply chain for TV in Europe. Since the previous TV Assembly Report published in 2006, the European TV set supply chain has changed considerably, notably because of the switch from CRT to LCD TVs as the consumer's technology of choice and from the slow roll-out of HD throughout the regions. The established brands have had their position in the market challenged in recent years by new companies attempting to seize market share during the transition to flat panel TVs, but aggressive strategies by the big brands has maintained their dominance particularly where they have adopted vertical integration within their manufacturing. Meko's analysis, on a company by company basis, details the technology and manufacturing strategies adopted by the brands, set-makers, EMS companies and panel makers, combining it with regional analysis and sales data to determine trends and expectations in the market and success rates for new entrants. Looking at shifts in manufacturing bases, key drivers, market forces, brand pressence and geographic indicators for the industry, the Meko TV Assembly Report 2010 is essential reading for anyone involved with the TV supply chain. Meko will release an updated version of the report in January 2010 to reflect the state of the industry. The report profiles more than fifty companies in the market including Acer Computer, Aclet Electronics, AOC, Arsenal Corporation, Atmaça Elektronik, Bang & Olufsen, Beko/Grundig Elektronik, Blurosso Technology, Cello Electronics (UK), Changhong Electric, Chunghwa Picture Tubes, Crea IT Technologies, Dantax International, FIC, Funai, Grundig, Haier, Hannstar, Harvard International, Hisense, Hitachi Europe, Hydis Technology, Innolux, Inventec, IPS Alpha, JVC, Keymat, Konka, LG Display, LG Electronics, Loewe, Metz, Mivar, Novatech, OKI , Orion Electric, Panasonic, Philips Electronics, Pioneer Electronics, Samsung, Samsung LCD Business, Samsung SDI, Sanyo, Schaub Lorenz, Sharp, Sony, TCL, Technisat Digital, Telecolor, THES Italia, Toshiba Europe, Vestel and Videocon.
