Cautious Optimism for Public Display Market
DATE: 2nd April 2009
This looks like a challenging year for the public display market in Europe, but it could benefit from a bigger share of media spending, according to Meko's DisplayCast market research service. "Although advertising revenues are generally expected to be down in 2009, the digital signage segment of the market looks as though it will take a larger share of a smaller pie", said Bob Raikes, managing director of Meko. "Although the retail sector is not rushing to increase investment at the moment, there is a desire to deliver marketing messages where they can be most effective, at the point of purchase. The efforts of the industry to develop lower cost and higher performing displays will also see sizes increase, which will help to offset a significant decline in market value. Volume will be almost flat in 2009, but that will look good alongside the market for some other industrial goods", he continued. Although the public display market is still maturing, established players are getting stronger, with 61% of the market taken by the top three of NEC, Samsung and Panasonic. Unit sales from 2007 to 2008 were almost flat at 231,460 and 232,639 respectively. Contact Bob Raikes at bobr@meko.co.uk or call +44 (0)1252 835385 for full details of Meko's forecast products.
