EMEA Desktop Monitor Shipments In Line With Expectations
DATE: 15th May 2007
Having hit a record high in Q4 2006, a seasonal drop in sales meant that shipments of desktop monitors in the MEA region dropped to 14.2 million units. However, the preliminary data compiled by Meko as part of its DisplayCast Desktop Monitor market intelligence service shows that year on year growth was in line with expectations at nearly 10% in volume terms.

Compared to Q4 2006, shipments were down by more than 19% with some companies faring better than others. "As we reported at the time of publishing our last set of quarterly shipment data, there was some concern that channels may have been over-stocked during Q1 due to strong sales in Q4 2006", noted Pete Gamby, research director at Meko. "However, the majority of the main players have fared reasonably well and sales were within a couple of percent of our forecast", he added. There were some notable exceptions amongst the top players with Dell, Philips and Benq all reporting negative year on year growth in unit sales.

In terms of market share, it was the Korean suppliers that took the top two places. Samsung reported sales of more than 2.6 million units for 10% year on year growth and the preliminary data shows that LG also did well to report more than 60% growth for the second quarter in a row. These two accounted for more than half of all sales in the Rest of Europe and Middle East & Africa regions.

In the west of Europe it was Dell that just held on to top spot despite its year on year decline in shipments. Samsung was almost up with the US PC vendor but was just pushed to second place, with HP a strong third and also very close in terms of share.

Acer was down to fifth place overall having been in third place in Q4 2006. The company saw shipments drop by nearly 40% sequentially.

Further down the list of brands, Hannspree continues to build its sales in EMEA and took nearly 4% by volume. Viewsonic was also up strongly year on year thanks to an excellent performance in the Rest of Europe and MEA region where its sales rose by more than 140% year on year.
