European Large FPD Market Booms On TV Set Sales
DATE: 3rd April 2007
The latest data from Meko's new Large Flat Panel Display (FPD) market intelligence report shows that the European market for such products is set to show strong growth in 2007 with unit sales rising by 18% compared to 2006. This equates to sales of nearly 78 million plasma and LCD displays in the desktop monitor, TV and public display markets. "This new report was designed to help those involved in the LCD supply chain at all levels to understand how the overall market for large flat panels is shaping up", commented Bob Raikes, Meko's managing director. "We wanted to give LCD and plasma panel makers as well as set makers and European sales and marketing teams a 'one stop shop' for volume, value and pricing data. The Large Area FPD report provides just that". This latest edition of the report shows a forecast to 2009 on a quarterly basis and forecasts units, pricing and value across the three market segments mentioned. In all, thirty different screen size and technology combinations can be analysed. "What's clear from the data is that it is the TV sector that's driving unit growth", noted Pete Gamby, Meko's research director. "Within that market, LCD is winning and already outsells plasma by nearly 6 to 1". Flat panel TV sales will reach 42 million units in 2009 with the north of Europe providing the largest demand at 20 million units. The data breaks Europe up into three regions - north, south and central & east. "At this level of detail, those in the supply chain that need to have an understanding of where the biggest growth is coming from can quickly see this without having to analyse data across the more than 35 countries that are covered by those three regions", noted Gamby. "The central and eastern region, which includes big country markets such as Russia and Turkey, is showing the strongest overall growth in 2007 with unit sales expected to rise by nearly 25% year on year". Although TV is showing the best growth opportunity and dominates in terms of revenue, the desktop monitor market is the winner in volume terms. In 2009, Meko predicts that 19" desktop monitors will be the biggest selling single category and account for 22% of sales with 32" LCD TVs in second place and nearly 15% of the market by volume. -end- For more information or graphics, please contact Pete Gamby on +44 (0)1276 22677 or by email at peteg@meko.co.uk.
