EMEA Desktop Monitor Market Bounces Back in Q3 2006
DATE: 10th November 2006
Following a very poor start to the year with sales below expectations in Q1 and Q2, the market for desktop monitors in Europe, the Middle East and Africa bounced back strongly in Q3 with shipments topping 14 million units. This is according to the latest preliminary data from Meko's DisplayCast desktop monitor market intelligence service.

The data shows many companies returning to positive year on year growth as well as showing the expected seasonal growth. The market was up by 12% in volume terms compared to the same period in 2005. Sequential growth is in excess of 28%.

"The slowdown in PC sales in Q2 which was attributed to some extent to the World Cup appears to have resulted in delayed purchases for customers", notes Pete Gamby, research director at Meko. "There are signs that the traditional 'back to school' boost in sales has been particularly strong this time and continued downward price pressure at some screen sizes has helped to keep sales moving". Shipments at some screen sizes are reported to have been restricted by supply issues as LCD panel makers have tried to promote larger sizes and also the more cost-effective wide format panels.

The increase in shipments was slightly ahead of Meko's estimate for the quarter but brings shipments for the year back in line with expectations.

By brand, Samsung again led with shipments in excess 2.3 million units and it maintained a more than 17% share of the market by volume.

Acer recovered strongly and has put its inventory and customer service issues firmly behind it. The company moved up into second place on the back of 38% year on year growth.

LG also did very well in Q3 and moved ahead of HP to take third place and a 10.9% share of the market.

Although Sony will no longer be supplying desktop monitors, the company has gone out on a high. Its final quarter of shipments in EMEA ended with sales up by more than 100% year on year and by more than 80% compared to the previous quarter. This moved the company up to 10th place in the overall rankings.
