Q2 2006 Desktop Monitor Shipments Below Expectations
DATE: 4th August 2006
The latest preliminary data from Meko's DisplayCast desktop monitor market intelligence service shows that the European desktop monitor market exhibited a worse than expected downturn in Q2 as RoHS compliance issues, inventory problems and the World Cup all took their toll on shipments. The initial draft of the data for EMEA also shows that penetration of LCD monitors in the market increased again in Q2 and, for European countries, nearly nine out of every ten monitors sold were LCD. Although the rate of increase in penetration has slowed due to saturation in some markets, a increasingly rapid fall in CRT sales also contributed to the poor performance in the second quarter. "Overall LCD monitor shipments were held back by various factors including the slowdown in PC sales caused by the World Cup", notes Pete Gamby, research director at Meko. "But there were some good signs for some vendors. Sony's channel restructuring appears to be paying dividends, Acer seems to have recovered from its inventory hangover and monitor specialists such as Viewsonic and NEC Displays performed better than the market as they diversified both territorially and in terms of products". Whilst there has been some stability in LCD monitor pricing during Q2, the signs of rapid falls at the street price level at the start of Q3 suggest that monitor makers are reacting to the slower than expected Q2 in order to get "back on track" with 2006 sales budgets. The total number of units shipped in EMEA was just over 10.5m units, below Meko's forecast for the region and down by 2% year on year. By brand, Samsung again led with shipments in excess 1.8m units and a 17% share of the market by volume. Dell and HP took second and third place with Acer showing flat year on year growth in fourth place. As noted, Sony did well compared to the market and grew unit sales quarter on quarter by 18%. This was by far the best performance of the top twenty suppliers with only Hyundai IQ also showing positive sequential growth. "Despite the fierce competition in the monitor market, we are still seeing new brands joining the battle", commented Jordan Popov, Meko's desktop monitor research manager. "One successful new entrant is Hannspree which has moved into the top twenty supplier list in just its second quarter of sales. The company has managed to establish a good channel in a short time and also has a very aggressive pricing strategy, helping it to build sales".
