LCD Public Display Shipments Double In Q1
DATE: 9th June 2006
The latest data from Meko's DisplayCast Public Displays market intelligence service shows that the European market for flat panel public and information displays showed solid growth year on year and in particular that LCD monitor shipments in this market grew by more than 100%. Whilst shipments of plasma monitors still dominate the sector, growth of this type of display has slowed. Year on year, shipment growth of plasma monitors was flat despite some good project wins for NEC Europe. "LCD public displays are proving to be more successful despite relatively higher initial purchase prices", notes Pete Gamby, research director at Meko. "Those that are promoting LCD products are able to sell a better total cost of ownership compared to plasma for some applications and are also opening up new markets due to the higher resolution capabilities of LCD panels". There is also an increasing choice for the customer in terms of screen size with Meko now reporting shipments at six screen size segments for LCD compared to just two a year ago. This means that plasma buyers now have an equivalent LCD to choose at all key sizes. Shipments of LCD public displays reached nearly 18,000 units, slightly ahead of Meko's last forecast for the market for Q1 2006. Plasma shipments were also slightly ahead of forecast at more than 37,500 units. By size, 42" LCD and plasma shipments account for three quarters of the market by volume. Emerging screen sizes in the LCD sector, such as 46" and 52", are only taking single digit shares at present. For the incumbent plasma technology, shipments at 50" are still strong at more than 6% of the total market and this screen size is where plasma can offer some price advantage at present. By brand, Panasonic led the overall market with an 18% share by volume. This was helped by the company's 26% share of the plasma sector. In the LCD market, one of the early adopters of the technology for public displays was NEC Displays. The company remains strong and led the market in Q1 with nearly 22% of sales by volume. --- ends --- Notes to Editors: For more information about Meko and DisplayCast please contact E-mail: bobr@meko.co.uk Tel: +44 (0)1276 22677 If you would like to receive press releases from Meko as soon as they are available, please send a blank email to: ListServer@meko.co.uk, with the subject line 'Subscribe MekoNews'. |
