Call for HD Quality logo for content
DATE: 14th September 2005

At the recent DisplayForum HDTV 2005 conference, Bob Raikes, managing director of European display market analyst Meko Ltd, called on the broadcasting industry to guarantee delivery of high quality HDTV to viewers by using a special mark to designate HD quality content.

"Europe has a chance to learn from the mistakes of the US", he said. "Even though HDTV has been widely adopted by viewers, as many as forty percent of subscribers are unhappy with the quality*. Set makers are working hard to deliver great hardware, but the final display can only be as good as the content. German broadcasters who plan to start broadcasting later this year have already admitted that some of their content will have originated at standard definition and will simply be upscaled".

Raikes called on the hardware trade association, EICTA, to work closely with broadcasters to devise a logo so that consumers can be sure of HD quality. EICTA has promoted the HD Ready and HD TV logos to help consumers ensure that they can display HDTV when it becomes available from broadcasters.

"This is a chance for those that really care about the quality of the images that they are supplying to customers to guarantee that material has been created in HD formats and has been transmitted at high enough bit rates that consumers can really make the most of the hardware", he added.

At the conference, Ross Young of DisplaySearch forecast that the HDTV market is expected to grow at a 44% CAGR to 78m units which will represent a 39% share of the 2009 TV market.

Other speakers at the conference included Thomas Wrede of SES Astra who spoke about the timetable for the development of HDTV in Europe, Bruce Berkoff of LG.Philips LCD who set out what LCD technology can bring and George Damigos of Sony who made a plea for set makers to help consumers and dealers to understand the significant changes that HDTV brings.

The proceedings of the conference are available from Meko in Europe (http://www.meko.co.uk) or DisplaySearch in the US. (http://www.displaysearch.com)

* At the recent DisplaySearch HDTV conference in Hollywood, 41% of the audience that had an HDTV set complained about the quantity and quality of true HD material available to them.
