European Monitor Market Weathers LCD Storm
DATE: 1st March 2004
European Monitor shipments in Q4 2003 exceeded shipments in Q4 2002 despite expectations that many vendors would not meet their Q4 targets, according to the latest figures from Meko's DisplayCast research service. According to Bob Raikes of Meko, "The end of 2003 was expected to be rather uncomfortable for most monitor suppliers. LCD panel "shortages" constrained supply and price rises conspired to dampen end user demand. However, the DisplayCast data shows that for many suppliers things were perhaps not as bad as they could have been. Although some, like Dell, did not see the sequential growth that the overall market experienced, there were enough success stories to keep the total number of units shipped in Q4 2003 higher than in Q4 2002." Full Year 2003 European CRT & LCD Monitor Shipments Company: Units (000s): 2003 Share Samsung: 5,740: 15.8% HP: 3,698: 10.2% Dell: 3,212: 8.8% Philips: 2,557: 7.0% LG: 2,420: 6.7% Acer: 1,493: 4.1% Fujitsu-Siemens: 1,398: 3.8% NEC Mitsubishi: 1,022: 2.8% NEC CI: 941: 2.6% Ingram: 923: 2.5% Source: Meko Samsung again retained its top position in the market with a healthy sequential and year on year rise in shipments. The company was able to increase its shipments of 15" LCD monitors and sold more than 40% more units in this category than in Q3. In contrast, 17" LCD shipments only grew by 19%. HP on the other hand saw its 17" LCD business grow strongly with a nearly 130% increase in unit sales compared to Q3. The company also registered strong increases in the >70kHz 17" CRT monitor sector with 138% growth. Philips growth rates sequentially and year on year were close to those of the market leader and the company took third place for the quarter. Dell experienced a relatively disappointing Q4 and managed only fourth place in the monitor market. However, the vendor grew its shipments sequentially and year on year. The overall year on year growth for the monitor market in Europe was 1%.
