European Monitor Market Consolidation Continues
DATE: 21th May 2003

Preliminary data from Meko's DisplayCast market research indicates that the European CRT and LCD desktop monitor market in Q1 2003 showed further consolidation with the top five players accounting for nearly 50% of sales by volume. According to figures from the company's survey of the market, the volume of monitors shipped during the quarter exceeded 9.6m units which represents a significant sequential decline of more than 13% and a year on year increase of around 15%.

Significantly, the "LCD monster" has now taken more than 45% of the market by volume and more than 70% by value.

The final figures for Q1 2003 have just been published and Meko's calculations of the shares for the top ten brands in the region are shown in the table below. At the top of the list again is Samsung which demonstrated year on year growth of 24%. The company shipped nearly 1.4m units in the period of which nearly 40% were LCD products, compared to around 25% in Q4 2002. This shift towards LCDs is reflected in the figures for the overall market.

Others brands that have seen significant year on year growth in Europe include Taiwanese suppliers Acer, AG Neovo and Benq, all of which have more than doubled their respective sales volumes compared to Q1 2002. Korean manufacturers such as Cornea and Hansol are also benefiting from the shift towards LCD monitors with double-digit year on year increases in sales.

The top supplier list is still dominated by the major PC brands and the large Taiwanese and Korean monitor suppliers. Dell has continued to make great gains in the monitor market and has a very good "attach rate" (the proportion of PCs sold compared to the number of monitors sold). The company's market share was close to 9% for the quarter and, for the first time, it shipped more LCD monitors in the quarter than it did CRT monitors.
