European Desktop Monitor Market Tops 10m Units In Q4 '02
DATE: 19th February 2003
- Sales volume is a new quarterly high - Samsung leads the market in Q4 - LCDs take more than 30% market share - 17 inch LCDs will become the mainstream desktop display The latest data from Meko's DisplayCast market research shows that the European CRT and LCD desktop monitor market in Q4 2002 reached another growth milestone despite continued economic uncertainty across the region. According to the first draft figures from the company's survey of the market, the volume of monitors shipped during the quarter exceeded 10m units - the first time this number of monitors has shipped in a three-month period since the company began its service. The last high point for the market was in Q4 2000 when 9.9m units were shipped in the period. An analysis of the figures show that the market shares for the top ten brands in the region are as shown in the table below. Top Ten Monitor Suppliers In Europe Samsung 15.41% HP 9.91% LG Electronics 7.07% Philips 6.78% Dell 6.73% Fujitsu-Siemens 3.91% AOC 3.84% NEC CI 3.50% Acer 3.09% Hyundai 3.08% Source: Meko's DisplayCast 2003 Samsung showed significant growth both year on year and sequentially. The company shipped in excess of 1.5m units in Q4 2002 of which nearly 25% were LCD products. The top supplier list is dominated by the major PC brands and the large Taiwanese and Korean monitor suppliers - AOC and Hyundai both made strong double digit sequential and year on year gains to secure a place amongst the winners in Europe. Another brand that has made a significant impact in Europe is Benq. The company has secured a place amongst the top twenty suppliers by volume within a year of establishing itself as a brand in its own right. Acer also continues to be successful, nearly doubling its Q3 2002 shipments in Q4 and demonstrating a more than 50% year on year growth. Looking at the trends by technology, it is clear that LCD continues to take share from CRT. The shows that the penetration of flat screen monitor technology was more than 30% versus CRT, again another "first" in the European market as a whole. By region, the German-speaking countries of Austria, Germany and Switzerland continue to shift quickly towards LCD and the Swiss bought nine LCD monitors for every one CRT unit in Q4. In the Nordic region, LCD penetration slowed somewhat during Q2 and Q3 2002 as prices increased but it would seem that the reductions seen in Q4 have changed this. In Meko's Region 4 (which includes Finland, Sweden and Norway), 17" LCD monitors have, as expected, started to take significant share from 17" and 19" CRT monitors. Overall, 17" LCD monitors are getting close to 10% of the European monitor market by volume. Meko expects that 17" LCD monitors will become the mainstream desktop display in future. The DisplayCast data shows that both 15" and 19" CRT monitors have a lower share of the market by volume than 17" LCD monitors. With 19" LCD monitors also showing significant growth, this category saw its market share nearly double from Q3 to Q4. In Switzerland nearly 5% of the market is represented by this category of flat screen monitors. ends Notes for editors: A executive summary of the LCD and CRT reports is available to editors only on request (see below for contact details).
