Italy Sees Highest Growth in Western European Monitor Sales

The Italian market surprised analysts by showing the largest growth in LCD monitor sales in Western Europe over the last year. According to Meko's DisplayCast data, sales of LCD monitors were 217% higher in Q2 than in the previous year. The total growth in the European LCD monitor market was around 120%. Sales volumes in Italy grew from 69,000 to 221,000 units in just one year.

The overall monitor market in Italy grew by 9.1% year on year, to 663,000 units, so a third of all monitors sold were LCD-based. In the second quarter of 2002, Italy was the third largest market in Europe for LCD monitors, ahead of France and hot on the heels of the UK and Ireland.

Traditionally the Italian market has been price driven, and has not been an early adopter of this type of technology and its IT market is generally smaller than that in France. However, as with mobile phones, the Italians are now taking the lead.
